The transverse carpal ligament is cut at approximately its midpoint over the median nerve. The ceiling ligament that runs across the top of the carpal tunnel is the target of surgery, designed to release the median nerve and relieve the compression upon it. CTS is linked to conditions and diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, pregnancy, and thyroid disease. When repetitive motion is to blame, it’s usually due to heavy use of vibrating tools. Wrist sprains or bone fractures can also lead to compression. With little extra space running through the wrist, even a small amount of swelling can affect the median nerve. Your family may simply have passed on to you a narrow carpal tunnel anatomy. While this is still the case for some people, research shows that it’s more often the result of genetics. Once it was thought that CTS was primarily caused by repetitive motion. If any of the soft tissues become inflamed, the swelling could compress the median nerve, causing a range of sensations in the hand and fingers, such as tingling or numbness, as well as loss of grip strength due to weakness in the thumb. There’s a lot going on in the carpal tunnel, and space is limited. The carpal bones form the base of the carpal tunnel, and the transverse carpal ligament serves as the tunnel’s “ceiling.” Through this space pass the median nerve and the nine flexor tendons that control bending of the fingers. It’s responsible for sensation in your thumb and first three fingers, as well as for control of the muscles at the base of the thumb. The median nerve is one of the primary nerves of the hand, branching off the spinal cord in the neck. These components come together in the wrist and pass through a narrow structure called the carpal tunnel. Bones, ligaments, and tendons work together with muscles to give your hand its detailed functions. The incredible flexibility and strength of the hand requires some complex anatomy for support. Reid is your first call in the Culver City area when you want to move past the pain and weakness of carpal tunnel issues. Reid, MD is a specialist in treating injuries of the upper extremities, including the hand and CTS. In advanced cases, a procedure called carpal tunnel release may be necessary to relieve pressure on the median nerve.

CTS typically gets worse over time without treatment, and it could result in nerve damage. This isn’t just an annoying ache that will go away.
#CARPAL TUNNEL PAIN SERIES#
You’ve got carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), a series of symptoms and conditions resulting from the compression of the median nerve. The pain may be intense enough to disturb your sleep. Soon, pain develops in the hand and wrist, and daily tasks become harder to perform. It may start with numbness or tingling in your fingers, or perhaps a feeling of weakness in your thumb.
